Sunshine, deep blue skies, snow covered trees, and frozen alpine lakes surrounded by majestic mountain peaks were our companions on this mid-week snowshoeing adventure at Snoqualmie Pass, WA. Located only 50 odd miles from Seattle, Snoqualmie Pass is easily accessible via the I-90 freeway. One of its jewels - Snow Lake - is the most visited destination in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. In summer, you can reach it in roughly 3.6 miles with an elevation gain of 1800ft. In winter, the approach depends on the snow conditions as avalanche danger is extreme and previous experience with travel in avalanche terrain is required. Prior to heading out, we made sure to keep an eye on the conditions of the snow pack by regularly checking the Northwest Avalanche Center's website. Once on the trail, we carefully paid attention to the surroundings. Backcountry snowshoeing, which often involves breaking trail, is not easy but has its definitive rewards. Looking at the pristine, sparkling as if it were winking at you snow touches you deep down to the core of your being. “I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently?
